Storstuu Winsnes

A CAUTIONARY NOTEMany of you, like our team of six, like to travel abroad to fly fish. Most of us use a reputable agent, who then books directly with the fishery. But how many of us really look at the contract between the agent and the provider (if available) or between the agent and you?In early 2020 our team booked, via our agent, to fish in mid-August 2021 the Winsnes beat on the Gaula. Covid then intervened and the fishery agreed to roll over our booking for the same week in August 2022. By January 2022 we had paid for the lodge and fishing, and hadbooked and paid for flights, car hire and the like. Leave from work and house/dog sitting were all arranged. So far so normal.But then things went wrong. In mid-July 2022, about a month before our trip, our agent was abruptly informed by Mr Hayes that he had made a mistake and had double booked our week. Further, the fishery maintained that the other party had booked first and there was therefore no room for us. To say that were astounded is to put it mildly. Our upset turned to anger when we subsequently discovered first, that Go Fishing Worldwide was still advertising places at Winsnes for our week as late as April 2022, and also that a party due to fish anotherc Norwegian river that week was switched some 4 weeks before departure to fish our booked beat on our river.Whatever the true explanation, the fishery had clearly breached its contract and had left us high and dry with very little notice.The fishery did return our money and did offer us a discount for the next year (which unsurprisingly we did not accept). There was no offer to repay our wasted airfares and the like.We were left with two alternatives neither of which were satisfactory. To call off the whole trip and suffer considerable economic loss and disappointment or try to mitigate this disaster. In the event, and after heroic hard work by our agent and by members of our team, we did secure alternative fishing on the Gaula for that week, but on a different beat. While we mitigated our airfare losses, and did fish, this was an expensive and unsatisfactory alternative. We had to rent an Airbnb, buy and cook our own food, hire guides and travel long distances to the river and the various pools. Subsequent attempts by us to obtain some contribution to these additional costs were swiftly rebuffed by Mr Hayes.We have received advice from a Norwegian lawyer. Norwegian contract law differs from English contract law in at least 2 respects. First in Norway you have to establish negligence to mount a claim, and secondly in Norway only direct financial loss is claimable and not non- economic loss for vexation, aggravation, disappointment and the like. Proving negligence was no problem it was clear and obvious but arguing direct financial loss in a foreign court would have been difficult and irksome, despite the help we would have received from fellow Norwegian fly fishermen.The simple lessons to be learnt by fellow fishers going abroad are – first, read the offered contract/s; second, seek to ensure that there is a clause in the contract/s that in the event of breach fair and reasonable compensation will be paid that includes damages for disappointment and general vexation; third (and related to the second), seek to ensure that any disputes are governed by English law.

Etter Politipensjonistforeningens i Trøndelag Sørs æmarkatur ble turen lagt innom Storstuu Winsnes på vei hjemover. Vi ble ønsket velkommen inni restauranten i det omgjorte fjøset av et hyggelig vertskap. Vertskapet hadde sørget for god korona-avstand rundt bordene blant gjestene og oppfordret oss til å spritvaske hendene på hver runde til anretningen. Vi følte oss i trygge omgivelser. Restauranten har alle rettigheter på salg av alkohol. Til tider serveres det her søndagsbuffét med retter tilpasset årstidene. P.g.a. den nåværende koronasituasjonen bør man sjekke restaurantens åpningstider på forhånd. I samme bygning finner man også en gårdsbutikk med diverse håndverk av lokale aktører. Koselig atmosfære. På baksiden av gården finns en parkeringsplass for omtrent 10-15 personbiler.

My husband Bill turned 60 this year and my gift to him was a week's fly fishing at Winsnes Lodge. He had an amazing time as did I and this was all down to the fabulous hosting and support given by Matt Hayes and his wife Anne Marit as well as the outstanding food cooked by Annbjorg (support by Jacob). This was a truly personal experience! The accommodation was fabulous (we were lucky as husband and wife) staying in a converted food barn. We ate traditional Norweigian food and they could not do enough for us. The icing on the cake was the fact that my husband caught two Salmon, beating his personal best on the fly

Veldig koselig sted. Liker du det gammeldags og folkelig så er dette riktig sted for overnatting. Veldig hyggelig vertskap. Et flott sted for selskaper og sammenkomster.
