Great monument to great explorers. You walk by the museum, and suddenly, there they are, standing, waiting for you to greet them. Erected On 14 December 2011, one hundred years to the day after the Norwegian Antarctic expedition reached the geographic South Pole, HM King Harald unveiled this memorial in bronze and granite. The members of the expedition were Roald Amundsen, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel and Oscar Wisting.

Roald Amundsen monument
On 14 December 2011, one hundred years to the day after the Norwegian Antarctic expedition reached the geographic South Pole, HM King Harald unveiled this memorial in bronze and granite. The members of the expedition were Roald Amundsen, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel and Oscar Wisting. The sculpture made by Håkon Anton Fagerås is a figurative dramatization of all the five explorers who reached the South Pole. Now they gaze out over the Oslo fjord to the south. All the sculptures have realistic facial expressions, and share what Lotte Sandberg, art reviewer in the Aftenposten daily, referred to as ‘a documentary quality’.
